"Bremen, Germany (CNN)Karsten P. empties a test tube filled with metal pieces into the palm of his hand. They're the tiny screws and bolts that held his face together after he and his partner Sven were violently assaulted in a life-changing attack outside their local store.
Two surgeries later and fearful of being attacked again, the openly gay 52-year-old taxi driver -- who doesn't want to be identified because of concerns of another attack -- avoids public spaces and always takes pepper spray with him. He and his partner have also been forced to move neighborhoods in the northwest German city of Bremen following mounting costs as a result of being injured.
"I went outside and saw someone kicking my partner's head. I was trying to stop him and right at that moment, I got hit from the side," Karsten recalls about the attack. "I kind of lost consciousness and when I got up again, I thought my partner was dead. He was all covered in blood and he didn't move at all.

Shawn Shirazi is angry about cultural relativism and the growing unwillingness of people here to criticize radical Islam for fear of being labelled racist or Islamophobic.
Born in Iran, Shirazi immigrated to Vancouver where he became a founding member of Cirque de So Gay, an activist group of gay and transgender Middle Eastern men. For several years, the group marched in the Pride Parade and even won an award for their originality. But this year, its application was rejected as “culturally insensitive.”
The rejection is a microcosm of what Shirazi calls “hypocrisy” when it comes to global human rights, but what others argue is showing respect for other cultures and religious traditions.
Its application described it as “casting off the shroud of oppression to unveil the Persian Princess beneath … The Islamic attire is more than just a piece of black fabric. It’s a tool used by governments to impose absolute control and authority over their citizens and even tourists.”
The intent was to encourage dialogue about oppression and individual freedom, “so people can express themselves as they choose, without threat of being flogged, stoned or beheaded.”
It was all too much for the parade organizers.
Vancouver Pride Society’s co-executive director Andrea Arnot said in an interview that organizers thought Cirque de So Gay made light of a nuanced issue.
“Many women choose to wear burkas. It’s part of their identity, their religion and their culture,” she said. “Of course, there are places where it’s enforced.”
Arnot says organizers found its proposal “quite shocking.”
“When I asked other people who are from that cultural or religious background, they said it was offensive,” she said. “I definitely wanted to be sensitive to what is happening in our communities right now.”
Yet, what Cirque de So Gay proposed was exactly what it did at the 2011 Vancouver Pride Parade — dancers threw off their body and face coverings to reveal very little underneath.

"A Russian religious television channel is offering to pay for one-way plane tickets for gay people serious about emigrating from the country.
In a video on its social media channels this week, Tsargrad TV called on gay people to compete for a one-way plane ticket overseas.

"An unofficial gay Pride parade organised by a right-wing nationalist is planned for July 29 to run through a predominantly immigrant neighbourhood with a large Muslim population.
The event is making the headlines in the country and globally for all the wrong reasons.
Pride Järva is organised by Jan Sjunnesson, a former editor-in-chief of Samtiden, a web-magazine owned by Sweden Democrats (SD), the anti-immigration party that became the third largest political party in the Swedish parliament following the 2014 general election.
Sjunnesson is also the editor of website Avpixlat, often described in mainstream Swedish media as a xenophobic and far-right website.
The planned parade has attracted criticism from the official Pride organisers, Sweden's LGBT federation, and anti-racism groups.

Публикации «Новой газеты» о преследовании геев в Чечне вызвали бурную реакцию со стороны чеченских чиновников. Причем, что важно, никто из них не отрицал факт задержаний, пыток и убийств. Все эти чиновники отрицали саму возможность существования в чеченском обществе людей гомосексуальной ориентации. Это было бы, наверное, смешно, если бы не зашкаливающий уровень агрессии, направленный против сотрудников «Новой газеты», а затем и «Эха Москвы» (реакция на жесткое заявление главреда «Эха» Алексея Венедиктова, продемонстрировавшего высший стандарт профессиональной солидарности).
3 апреля 15 тысяч религиозных и общественных деятелей Чечни собрались в центральной мечети Грозного и высказали открытые угрозы в адрес журналистов. Было понятно, что таким образом власти Чечни уводят в сторону разговор о бессудных репрессиях в республике и, пользуясь ультраконсервативным общественным настроем в отношении гомосексуальности, канализируют агрессию в сторону тех, кто поднял эту тему, якобы оскорбляющую национальные и религиозные чувства всех чеченцев.
9 апреля Рамзана Кадырова вызвали в Москву. На встрече с Путиным Кадыров вынужден был отчитываться о ситуации с преследованием чеченских геев и по факту угроз в адрес журналистов. Он заявил президенту страны, что информация «Новой газеты» — ложь. Он сказал: «Хорошие люди в кавычках пишут то, что у нас в республике… ну даже говорить про это неудобно (в этом месте у Кадырова нервный смех), людей задерживают там, убивают. Даже назвали там одного фамилию (идентифицирует человека. — Е. М.)… Сказали — его убили, а он находится дома. Вот на таких неподтвержденных фактах в республике бывают в год два-три раза <скандальные публикации о Чечне>…»
Рамзан Кадыров явно до конца не продумал свой разговор с Путиным. Поспешив обвинить «Новую газету» во лжи, он сам обманул президента.
Дело в том, что «Новая газета» никаких фамилий не публиковала — ни живых, ни убитых людей. Мы сразу приняли на себя обязательство не предавать публичности персональные данные жертв без их согласия или согласия со стороны родственников. Мы руководствовались принципом «не навреди» и учитывали национальные и религиозные особенности чеченского общества."
