One of my most important work tools is a bingo wheel which I throw wooden balls in labelled with the projects I need to work on - I've found it absolutely impossible to run a schedule based on priority, they all need work all the time and thinking about which one is the most pressing is just wasting time. I spin out a project, set a timer and work on it for half an hour or an hour to take it forward, then I spin again until it's time to stop working. It sounds quite ridiculous but it beats every other system I've ever tried for productivity; you just have to make sure the right balls are in the cage, throw in more if a deadline is approaching or take some out if something gets less urgent. Statistically, as long as it all gets done on time, who cares what order it happened in?

When you close source a roguelike you lose 5 luck. To combat that you should get a tome of bitbucketing and some scrolls of backup.

@blog4avatar

@kzn

Imagine a world where your editor doesn’t pop-up a giant fucking dialog
whenever you try to search for something. If you find yourself grabbing
dialog windows and moving them out of the way to see the code you need to
reference use the dialog, then it’s time to change editors.

The prominence of causal intuitions is a recurrent theme in this book because
people are prone to apply causal thinking inappropriately, to situations that
require statistical reasoning. Statistical thinking derives conclusions about
individual cases from properties of categories and ensembles. Unfortunately,
System 1 does not have the capability for this mode of reasoning; System 2
can learn to think statistically, but few people receive the necessary
training.

Daniel Kahneman. Thinking, Fast and Slow

A reliable way to make people believe in falsehoods is frequent repetition,
because familiarity is not easily distinguished from truth. […] People who
were repeatedly exposed to the phrase “the body temperature of a chicken”
were more likely to accept as true the statement that “the body temperature
of a chicken is 144°” (or any other arbitrary number). The familiarity of one
phrase in the statement sufficed to make the whole statement feel familiar,
and therefore true. If you cannot remember the source of a statement, and
have no way to relate it to other things you know, you have no option but to
go with the sense of cognitive ease.

“But,“ said the Headmaster. “But, but what am I to tell the Ministry? You can't just lose a Dementor!”

Another one of my favorites was by Brenda Baker called struct, which took Fortran programs and converted them into a structured programming language called Ratfor, which was Fortran with C syntax. This seemed like a possible undertaking, like something you do by the seat of the pants and you get something out. In fact, folks at Lockheed had done things like that before. But Brenda managed to find theorems that said there's really only one form, there's a canonical form into which you can structure a Fortran program, and she did this. It took your Fortran program, completely mashed it, put it out perhaps in almost certainly a different order than it was in Fortran connected by GOTOs, without any GOTOs, and the really remarkable thing was that authors of the program who clearly knew the way they wrote it in the first place, preferred it after it had been rearranged by Brendan. I was astonished at the outcome of that project.
