Смотрю в пыхокод, который писал полгода назад, и в свой же код, но годичной давности. Хочется взять и заплакать, но не ясно от чего: от вырвиглазности кода, вырвиглазности пыхи или от того, что это всё надо переписать.

If you need the best performance out of your production box, you might want to throw together a script to check out which method is fastest for what size files on that particular machine, then optimize your code to check the file size and use the appropriate function for it. Вот можно открыть файл, собрать содержимое через fgets и закрыть файл. Чем от этого подхода на фундаментальном уровне отличается file_get_contents()? Оно, же, по сути, делает абсолютно то же самое, а собрать содержимое файла как-то иначе, нежели это делают всякие fgets(), вроде как не получится.
