Then the Digital Cinema Initiative came along and standardized two resolutions for distribution: 2048 x 1080 and 4096 x 2160. They are close enough to the TV HD and UHD standards that they can use some of the same equipment, but the images are a bit wider. Naturally, these are called “2K” and “4K”. Note that “4K” really means 4096 x 2160, and isn’t the same as UHD 3840 x 2160.
