Much like the French army nearing Moscow in the fall of 1812, HBO's long-gestating Napoleon mini-series is maybe, almost, finally done with its journey. According to The Hollywood Reporter, True Detective's Cary Fukunaga is in talks to direct a six-hour series on the French emperor, which will be based on Stanley Kubrick's research notes and uncompleted script for a Napoleon film. Kubrick began work on the large-scale biographic take on Napoleon in the 1960s, but eventually shelved his work. Back in 2013, Steven Spielberg revived the idea and started developing the project for TV. David Leland (The Borgias) will write the script for this version based off Kubrick's unfinished script. Kubrick's sister Christine and brother-in-law Jan Harlan have given HBO access to Kubrick's archives for research. There, Leland and Fukunaga might find another dusty tome, full of scribbles about chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla ice cream: Kubrick's mythic Neopolitan project.
