Ironically, even progressives and anti-harassment activists have adopted the tactic: the conservative blogger Chuck Johnson — of whom The Intersect is no fan — was rightly outraged when Gawker published the (irrelevant, unconfirmed) years-old rumor that he’d defecated on the floor once in college. In explaining why he published the post, Gawker’s Greg Howard wrote jokily that Johnson had “been caught lying many times before” and “it’s more important than ever to fact check.”
